3 Pillars to Deepen Your Faith In God

It was a hot sweltering night. The kind of heat that causes you to sweat as soon as you step out of a cold shower. The kind where the fan blew only hot air.

In hopes of getting some relief from the heat, the little girl decided to open her bedroom window, which was really a roughly sawed-off piece of plywood that replaced the windowpane that had broken a long time ago.

Some time during the night, something woke her up. Was it the fan next to her head? Then she heard it again. It was coming from the window.

Quickly and quietly she got out of bed and turned on the bedroom lights. To her horror, she say the knuckles of a would-be intruder who was just minutes away from being in her bedroom.

The sudden lights scared him away and by the time she fled to her parents’ bedroom and back, he was long gone.

That little girl is me. And this is the story I often think back to when I am afraid or feeling fearful.

Why?

Because, it is one of the times I had a personal, intimate expericen with God.

This is the day, He became not just the God of Isaac, Abraham and Jacob. But the God of Eva as well.

I want very much for you to make Him your personal God as well. To have such a profound and intimate experiecne with Him that you can stand firm when the rivers rage and you can be sure of who you serve.

Faith is in the Doing

Prayer is such a personal activity isn’t it? It is one of the few things we all have to do for ourselves.

Sure, we can ask others to pray on our behalf. We can plead for others to include our requests in theirs when they pray but having a relationship with God requires us to be intentional about choosing Him.

There are times when we all feel like we are far away from God. Especially right now with all that is happening in the world becuase of the coronavirus, we are tempted to question why things happen the way they do.

But this is also the time we must cling to our faith and to what we believe to be true.

Believing in God, however requires some fundamental work beforehand. There are foundations we need to have in place before we can stand firmly on of our faith.

There are 3 things you need before you truly believe God.

You and I can quote all the Bible verses, read all the inspirational quotes, hear all the stories about the power and might of God but without these 3 things, it won’t impact your heart. It won’t change your story.

3 Pillars You Need to Know and Love God

1. You need to know who God is. Not just what I or anyone else tell you who He is but rather who He is to YOU. Personally. In your own life. This might sound obvious to most of us because of course, we need to know who someone is before we can believe in them. And yet, many of us don’t spend the time truly making God our own personal God by getting to know Him. One of the best ways to do this is by looking at how God has already revealed Himself to you. God is always with you, even when you do not recognize His presence. Who is your God?

I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me. John 10:14

We all have past experiences we can look back on and see God’s fingerprints all over them. It is so reassuring to know that God is the same, today, tomorrow, and forever.

2. You need to know His words. To be so intimately familiar with them that when troubles come, or when negative thoughts appear, you can fight back with the fire of His Word. I don’t know about you but I long to be so familiar with the Word of God that I can summon verses from scripture to handle any difficulties that might come my way.

I want when my son comes to me with feelings of inadequacy or anxiety that I can share with him exactly what God says about him. Reading the Word of God and being intimately familiar with it, are two different things. Anyone can read the Bible but a true son or daughter of God don’t just read the words, and forget them but rather, we read them, tuck them into our heart and live them out to those we come in contact with.

“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12

Sometimes reading the Bible can be overwhelming and I dare say, confusing. Recently I have found having a Bible reading plan to be so helpful.

The Bible reading plan keeps me on task and tells me exactly what I need to read each night. It has made such a huge difference and makes my Bible reading time, not just powerful but enjoyable as well. Grab your FREE Bible Reading Plan for this month in the Faith Vault Resource Library.

3. Lastly, to believe in God, you need to choose that He is what He says He is and He will do what He says He will doHaving faith is a choice.  It is choosing to believe the things that we know to be true in our hearts.  It’s clinging to the reassurance that there is a force bigger than you and I.  There is a power that surpasses our understanding and protects us with overwhelming and paternal love.

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10

Choosing to believe in God is accepting the love that He freely offers us and invites Him to be the Lord and Master of our lives.

It’s saying, “Lord, I surrender to You and want you to guide and lead me and my life.” Choosing to believe is like having God as your compass in life and knowing that you are never alone.

What’s Possible…

There you have it.  You have to first KNOW who God is, LEARN His Words and what He says about you and your life and CHOOSE to believe.

When I realize these 3 things, it really changed not just how I pray but also WHY I pray. It’s a real prayer game-changer. It makes God so much more real and breathes new life into my prayers and petitions.

When you have these 3 things, you pray with BOLDNESS. You trust more and your faith will grow ten-folds.

Which on do you need the most help when it comes to these three pillars?

I pray that this knowledge blesses you and refreshes your soul as you draw closer to Him.
