3 Prayers To Soothe An Anxious Heart

Do you have an anxious child?  Or are you facing anxiety yourself? One of my sons has anxiety and it hurts my heart to see my baby so worried each day. I am sure you feel the same way.  Here are 3 prayers that are helping my anxious child.  I hope it helps you or your child as well.

A note: Before I share the 3 prayers that have helped my anxious child, I just want to take a moment to tell you that you are not alone in your struggle.  Having a child with anxiety or facing anxiety personally is exhausting and infuriating at the same time.  It is also heartbreaking to see wrestle with so much – often times – unnecessary worry.  Please reach out to a professional for help.  Remember God helps those who help themselves.

“I feel like I’m in a battle,” I told my mom over the phone.

It had been a day of constant prayers and conversations with my son who suffers from anxiety.  His fear affects us all deeply and I was exhausted.

We have sought professional help.  I am reading books after books on this topic to help him as best we can.

We have limited his use of Youtube and they have all helped.

In addition to all this, I am also praying for him.  All.The.Time.  Everyday.

I recently thought that it would also be helpful for him to pray for himself.  Thankfully prayer has been a constant in our home and something we do regularly at dinner and during family meetings.

He smiled when I suggested that he pray as well.

Here are the 3 prayers that my son is saying daily to soothe his anxious heart.  Sometimes we say them together before bed.  Sometimes he says them alone before school.

I pray they help you as well.

This is one of the first Psalms my mom taught me and it has gotten me through many a fearful night.  Whenever I am afraid I recite this to myself and I can feel the peace and calm wash over me.  This Psalm reminds me of God’s love for me and His promise to always protect and defend me.  It brings reassurance to an anxious heart. It is like a healing balm that will give you peace.   I changed the word ‘you’ to ‘me’ to make it more personal and powerful for you.

Psalm 121 is my son’s favorite to say in the morning before school.  It is a lot shorter than Psalm 91 but is similar as well. It is a great prayer to say before leaving the house.

In addition to my son praying for himself, we also do a morning blessing before he leaves for school.  The Numbers 6 prayer is our favorite.  In it, we are asking God’s favor on each other and on the day.  We are placing ourselves in His care and surrendered everything to Him.

I hope these prayers will help you find comfort and peace in times of anxiety.  I am praying for you and your family.

Do you have a favorite prayer when you are fearful or anxious?  I would love to add more to our list.

  1. I love these prayers…especially the Numbers 6 benediction. What a beautiful way to send each other off for the day. I’m sure this will be something your son will remember for a lifetime. 🙂

    1. Thank you Amy. I hope it helps him feel a little less afraid and anxious as he goes about his day. I say it to myself when I’m afraid as well. Thank you for stopping by. xo
