“Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18

Paul’s life was not an easy one.  He had been thrown in jail, shipwrecked, scorned, and suffered severe beatings. Yet, he could sing hymns and pray to the Lord in jail, he could write letters of encouragement while under house arrest.

He learned to find joy no matter how difficult and bleak the circumstances were.  In fact, just 2 verses earlier in 1 Thessalonians 5:16, he told the church to “Always be joyful.” (NTL).  The keyword in both these verses is “all circumstances” and “always”.

But how can we be joyful when your heart is broken, you are battling an illness, or hurt in your family?

The answer is in giving thanks.  Joy and thanksgiving go hand in hand.  When we learn to give thanks, not once, or twice, but making it a lasting habit that is part of our daily routine and make it as frequent as breathing, that is when we find joy and the resilience to persevere in difficult times.

Truly giving thanks all day long and recognizing the value of what you have – even if it’s not a lot – joy meets you there.

Give yourself the gift of gratitude!

Journal prompts:
