For nothing will be impossible with God. Luke 1:37
There is so much fear right now. So many questions about the future.
When will they find a cure for the coronavirus?
Will the kids be able to go back to school to finish the school year?
What will the summer look like?
How many will be affected and will someone I know get it?
Fear and uncertainty.
My mind does not like uncertainty. If left to its own devices my mind will look for things that it can control and something it can focus on in the midst of so much fear.
I go to social media in search of news to occupy my wandering mind.
I happen upon a post from someone announcing a new baby coming this summer. Another post about the stress of homeschooling. And then my eyes land on a shared post about someone’s loved one who has contracted the virus and is in ICU.
Ugh! And just like that, I feel the familiar prickle of fear on the back of my neck and my arms are covered in goosebumps.
My mind suddenly now has something to focus on and like an arrow aimed at its target it hits zeroes in on this news. “Oh gosh,” says my way-ward mind, “what if that happens to me or someone I love too?”
All of a sudden, I give up my joy and embraced fear and anxiety instead.
Perhaps it’s not even social media that brings you fear. Maybe you live with someone who can’t help but ‘share‘ all that he or she is reading in the news as a way of helping them cope with the times.
They tell you the statistics, the most recent celebrity who now has it and the latest economic downturn.
Whatever the source of your discomfort and fear, I want you to know that you are not alone.
And even more important, there is something you can do about it.
Hope is contagious too
For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock. Psalm 27:5
Fear is everywhere right now and the enemy is trying to use it to steal your joy and make you forget who and whose you are.
Don’t let him!
Because fear trickles into every crack in our life, and it can spread like wildfire. But just as fear is contagious so is hope. So is light.
Hope and joy is our birthright, given to us by God Almighty and we should not let anyone or anything take it away from us.
I don’t want to completely disconnect from the news or social media, and maybe you don’t either. In fact, it’s healthy to stay up to date on what is going on so we can remain diligent and know what to pray for.
What I’ve done is to not look at my phone or read the news until I have read at least one verse from the Bible about God’s promises.
It has helped me SO much!
The words “fear not” or “do not be afraid” appear so frequently in the Bible. Like you, I have not taken the time to count all of them.

126 Bible Verses to Overcome Fear
Why not try to memorize as many of them as you can? Write these down on some post-it notes and put them all over your house until you have taken them to memory and just say them at any time.
Before grabbing your phone to look at Facebook say….
- Isaiah 41:10
“Do not be afraid, I am with you! I am your God – let nothing terrify you; I will protect you and save you.”
This is God’s promise to us. He will protect us and save us from every evil. Do you believe it? I often tell my kids even though I love them so very much, God loves them even more. This always blows their minds – mine too!. Can you imagine being so completely known but Him and yet completely loved as well? It is a love that truly surpasses all understanding. He loves us with an unconditional, overwhelming love that will protect and save you.
Before logging into Instagram say….
- Psalm 46:11
“God is our shelter and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble, so we will not be afraid, even if the earth is shaken and mountains fall into the ocean depths.
I don’t know about you, but it certainly feels like the earth is shaken right now. Everything is upside down. But aren’t we lucky that God the supreme God is our shelter and strength? We are under His mighty wing and protection. Imagine Him now sheltering you my friend and believe that what He says is true.
Before checking the news say…..
- Joshua 1:9
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”
This verse stopped me in my tracks. When we are fearful we are actually going against God’s command. And I don’t know about you but that is the last thing I want to do, especially now. Therefore, if God has commanded me and you to be courageous then it means He will defend us. He will be our refuge. He will be our protector.
These are just 3 of the many powerful promises God has made to us to help us overcome fear! Want more than just 3? Here are 126!
